The area of medicine known as andrology focuses only on problems related to male infertility and reproductive health. It is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of problems related to male reproduction as well as the study of male anatomy and physiology.
Andrology is gaining importance both at the clinical level and research levels. There is an increasing awareness of Gynaecologists and Family physicians to evaluate male infertility as it contributes significantly to overall infertility rates. Male infertility is handled at Level 1 and Level 2 ART Clinics. The primary contact of infertile couples majorly remains with the gynaecologist, so it becomes imperative for the Gynaecologist to diagnose and treat even male infertility. Sometimes males are hesitant to be treated by a female Gynaecologist. However, given the circumstances of scarce access to an Andrology lab or timely consultation with an Andrologist, they accept to be treated by a Gynaecologist.
It is to be carefully noted that Andrologist is the obvious choice for specialized male fertility treatments such as:
• A common sexual disorder among men- Erectile Dysfucntion
• Diagnosing and treatment of testosterone deficiencies and related conditions
• Assisted Reproductive Technologies – including TESA, PESA
• Andrologists often advise couples seeking help on sperm banking ensuring preservation for future use.
Understanding andrology's significance and the function of an andrologist in treating male reproductive health disorders is crucial in today. With this in-depth reference to andrology's definition, goals, diagnostic implications, and much more, you can take your understanding of men's health to a new level.
To provide suitable diagnosis and surgical procedures for male infertility, there is a need to elevate training and expand facilities at the ART Centres. As the number of Andrologists is less access to them is even more challenging. Further, they are harboured in top cities, either attached to IVF centres or corporate hospitals leading to untimely interventions and adding to the cost burden.
There are few Andrology courses for Urologists to become Andrologists. 1-year Fellowship in Andrology is offered for candidates post MBBS +MS or MBBS + McH (Uro) or MBBS + DNB (Uro).
Medical management and lifestyle modifications can be treated on an OPD basis too. The accurate diagnosis of minor findings and treating it rightly could greatly influence outcomes and can do away with Andrologist visits.
Ironically very few training centres offer Andrology certificate courses, some offer Andrology course online.
Medline Academics offers hybrid mode Basic Andrology course that could address the right diagnosis and treatment of male infertility at Level 1 & Level 2 centers.
